Of the worst paying college degrees of 2011, CNN noted that those in the related fields of Philosophy, Theology, Religious Studies all ranked next to each other. Though no one should be able to look down their nose at a doctor of philosophy, or a noted scholar of theology, you might want to count on picking up the bill if you go to lunch with such an esteemed person.

Similarly, though art, theater and literature are important, admirable, and inspiring parts of culture, there’s a reason the stereotype is of
the starving artist, not the well-fed, BMW-driving artist. As noted in a report by the PBS Newshour, those are fields that are incredibly
difficult to break through in, and they depend as much on timing, luck and personal connections as they do hard work, at least in terms of making a living. Besides, the development of one’s skills in artistic mediums comes through personal effort, and many believe that they can’t be taught. So just because you know for a fact that you’re going to be the next Ernest Hemingway or Jane Austen, don’t expect your dad to brag at his employee picnic about how his kid just got good marks on their flash fiction assignment.

Shockingly, or, perhaps not, given the current climate of the country, degrees in such seemingly important fields as Children and Family Studies, Elementary Education, Social Work, Special Education, and Public Health all rank at the bottom of the potential pay scale, according to The Huffington Post. Makes you wonder what ever happened to the saying “Think of the children!” At this point, it seems like you’d be better off thinking about Hummers, since petroleum engineering ranked at the top of the list of best paying college degrees. Now there’s a career your parents can be proud of, assuming they don’t drive a Prius.
This isn’t to say that any course of study is a waste of time. Wisdom garnered in any field is worthwhile, and there are those that hold a belief, antiquated as it may seem, that the point of higher is education is to garner education, rather than a career. But in this day and age, with the economy down the drains, fewer and fewer jobs available, and college tuitions at their highest levels ever, one can hardly blame hard-working parents for turning blue when the apple of their eye, who they’ve scrounge and saved to send off to university, comes home for the holidays with the news that they’ve decided not to pursue that degree in bioengineering after all, and that they think they’ll be much happier with a B.A. in Latin.

Whether for good or for ill, we can only hope that some of these accomplished scholars earned their post-graduate degrees through online schools, rather than subject their fellow students to some of their more radical experiments.

Peter Venkman (“Ghostbusters”)
Ph. D. in: Psychology, Parapsychology
What he did: Formed the “Ghostbusters” team with Egon Spengler, Ph.D., Ray Stantz, Ph.D. and Winston Zeddmore, USMC.
Why we hope he earned his degree online: Can you imagine being in the lab where he developed the proton packs? The safest place to do that would be online.

Reed Richards (“Fantastic Four”)
Ph. D. in: Physics, Electrical Engineering
What he did: Formed the “Fantastic Four” superhero team with his best friend, Ben Grimm (“Thing”), his future wife, Sue Storm (“Invisible Woman”), and her brother, Johnny Storm (“Human Torch”).
Why we hope he earned his degree online:. He stole an experimental spaceplane, turned his best friend into an orange-skinned rock monster, and allowed Jessica Alba to continue to believe she could act in the two “FF” movies.

Hubert J. Farnsworth (“Futurama”)
Ph. D. in: Unknown, possibly Robotics
What he did: Founded Planet Express Delivery Service in 30th Century
Why we hope he earned his degree online: Between his lack of business sense (sending Fry and friends out on suicide missions) and his relations with evil CEO Mom, he represents the worst in the corporatization of science.

Emmett Brown (“Back to the Future”)
Ph. D. in: Unknown, possibly Physics
What he did: Invented “flux capacitor”, the power source for the DeLorean time machine.
Why we hope he earned his degree online: No ethical university, campus-based or online, would allow such reckless behavior as buying plutonium from Libyan terrorists. Although online schools didn’t exist in 1985, he could have used the time machine to jump ahead and earn his doctorate.

The Doctor (“Doctor Who”)
Ph. D. in:  Unknown, possibly Physics and Engineering
What he did: Traveled through time, defeated alien menaces, regenerated ten times
Why we hope he earned his degree online: As much trouble as “the Doctor” has had with both his TARDIS and his companions over the last fifty years, he may need to go back online for refresher courses.

Despite the convenience of earning a degree online, perhaps some of these schools should use stricter entrance criteria for their post-graduate programs. The last thing these schools need is another Dr. Octopus or Dr. Evil ruining their reputations.

Anyone who has ever set foot in a city has encountered buskers—or street performers—of various stripes: the young and starry-eyed, the old and committed, the good and the bad, the desperate, the destitute, and the just plain weird. Often it can make a special night out in the city even more magical: you stumble upon a performer whose talent, vibrancy, or uniqueness touches something inside of you. It feels as though you’re watching a performer who pours over an accredited online business degree program in order to learn how to capture markets and deliver their goods, in addition to building their chops. Whether or not you hand over to them any of your hard-earned cash is a different matter, but at least you caught an unexpected act of showmanship.

Other times, this is not what happens. In subway stations, on street corners, in public parks and squares, busking can draw undesirable crowds, lead to noisiness, and leave a mess behind. The question for cities these days is whether or not buskers bring something positive to a city, or are simply a nuisance.

Many cities have specific licenses for busking in certain areas—Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Chicago all require these licenses to perform in most of their public areas, including parks and subway stations. Of course, many buskers don’t obtain the required licenses. KTNV reports that property owners and Clark County officials in Nevada had their fill of unlicensed performers making money along the Las Vegas strip—one of the most concentrated areas for street performers in all of the country, and decided to crack down on them, finding ways to cite them for public nuisance. Likewise, San Francisco, New York and other cities have recently been making it harder for buskers to perform, citing public good as the reason for their own crackdowns.

Yet, in other areas, busking thrives. The LA Times notes that, even in a bad economy, the busking industry is “booming,” One street performer interviewed wisely notes that there is a new emphasis on such shows, seeing as how “It’s the only kind of entertainment where you get to pay what it’s worth,” The article goes on to profile an annual street performance festival held in San Diego, which draws a good crowd every year, bringing a lot of excitement and tourism to the city.

Economics professor for the University of Washington Dick Startz sums things up pretty succinctly. “Busking” he writes, “may be the ultimate example of individual free enterprise making for a better community. Music brings people together and adds to the value of public space. Individual stress is reduced and strangers get to share a little something. “

Beyond the arguments over licensing, income, and all the other webs which can entangle artistic expression when dealing with city bureaucracy, most can agree with Startz’ statement. As well as when he writes, “Bach or break dancing — it doesn’t matter. Just people raising a joyous noise. And the rest of us paying with a broad smile, loud applause, and maybe a coin or two tossed into the hat.“
