  1. Meditate. Sit in silence and think.
  2. Listen to music. Music can be a great stimulator for your inspiration. Make a playlist of your favorite songs and listen to them as you try coming up with writing ideas. Your creativity will be sparked soon enough.
  3. Have snacks around. Food can be tempting and distracting. While trying to write something you might think “Maybe I should go eat something and then return to writing.†By the time you visit your kitchen or order something, all creativity is lost. The best solution is to keep a few snacks and fluids around your workstation to satiate those sporadic food temptations.
  4. Change your view. Monotony is the nemesis of creativity. Staring at your typewriter or monitor for hours will not inspire you to write anything. Try changing your line of site or the object that you are viewing. Try noticing things in the room that you might not notice normally.
  5. Go out. If you cannot find anything new in your room, go out. Take a walk and observe nature. See how people interact with each other. Something unique is bound to reveal itself.
  6. Exercise. If you are overexcited some exercise can extract some of your energy and bring to a mental level where you can write. Similarly if you are under-excited about something, exercise can bring up your heartbeat rate and motivate you to do something, hopefully to write.
  7. Speak to a friend. Conversation is another stimulator for writing. Calling a friend ensures that the conversation takes place with somebody you are comfortable with. Talk about your writing or any other issue on your mind. See what ideas your mind generates knowingly or unknowingly.
  8. Read something irrelevant. You might have gone through endless texts relevant to your topic. For a change, try something irrelevant. Reading something not related to what you want to write can refresh your mind.
  9. Smell new things. The sense of smell is often underrated by people. In actuality smells have potent effects on our mind. Try out a scented candle or an air freshener in your room. The smell might transport your mind to another place thereby inspiring you.
  10. Free-write for a while. Write about anything. Let your thoughts wander. There is no need for your free-writing to make sense. Perhaps you will pen down something you instantly realize is a brilliant idea.
  11. Record your voice. A voice recorder is a great tool to record your thoughts. You can start “free-thinking†and let it all loose. Later you can play back the ideas you brainstormed and filter the good ones.
  12. Change the interface. Change your text editor. Word fans should try writing on Notepad or Windows Live Writer. A different interface might be just the change you need.
  13. Change the platform. Take the interface change a step further by leaving the computer and using a typewriter or pen and paper.
  14. Write a letter to yourself. Write a letter to yourself giving advice on writing. Then read that letter and do everything you had previously written.
  15. Just start. Setup a time limit and start writing about your topic. You might squeeze the creativity out of the places it hides at.
